Reinforced Outerwear

by Annie Mazzola

Around Christmas, Mariah Carey will return with her unmistakable "♫ It’s tiiiiime ♬", but since it is only October and our friend Mariah will remain in hibernation a little longer, I am shouting this "♫ It’s tiiiiime ♬" at the top of my lungs! And not for Christmas, but for an item, an element, a friend, a loyal companion, and why not, a great love that has finally returned: THE DUVET.

Friends at home who love summer, let me tell you, you might not like this piece—I would almost venture to say it might annoy you—but we can finally declare that summer is officially over. Personally, I could not wait, and after gathering opinions from dear friends near and far, I realised I am certainly not the only one.

Bye-bye vest tops, bye-bye short-sleeved t-shirts with bare arms kissed by the sun, and a fond farewell to shorts and lightweight dresses too. It is time to wrap up warm, and simply playing with layers as I suggested a month ago is no longer enough: here, we truly need to increase the thickness of our garments, the weight of the piece!

And while at home the duvet reigns supreme, closely followed by the ever-present sofa throw, inside our wardrobe it is time to focus on outerwear. You might be wondering: "Annie, is it already time to do the seasonal wardrobe switch?" My answer is: Yes! Summer is definitely not coming back and temperatures will keep dropping, so get ahead and do not get caught unprepared, because "the seasons are not what they used to be".

I am about to make some very bold statements—things I never thought I would say, let alone write down: in the coming weeks, we will finally manage to wear that light jacket, that cropped jacket, and even the trench coat, the duster coat, call it whatever you like, but yes, we will actually get to wear it, and that is not an occasion to underestimate! Every year this piece gets abandoned in the wardrobe because, inexplicably, we go straight from swimwear to padded coats, and those gorgeous trench coats bought with the best intentions remain hanging there waiting for the next "in-between season".

This year the story feels completely different, but since the weather will probably change at least fifteen times between writing this piece and its publication, I am getting ahead of the game to tell you how "reinforced outerwear" works.

No, it is not an outdoor aperitif sipped in Persona outerwear, but a piece that is not yet strictly winter-weight—in fact, I would describe it as rather light—reinforced and made warmer by layering it over a sweatshirt or a fine-knit cardigan (yes, I said cardigan in October), so you can finally make the most of it instead of leaving it in the wardrobe in the vain hope of being chosen.

Calling it just outerwear feels like an understatement: an oversized wool-blend coat, a short jacket, a classic trench, a tailored blazer, a long trench coat, a denim-effect jacket crafted with a distinctly different weight, an egg-shaped jacket, a fitted trench, an oversized jacket, and why not, a reversible bomber jacket that lets you make the right choice at the right moment in a single move. With buttons, without, with a zip, or with a tie belt to highlight the waist, you are spoilt for choice. What I truly love, beyond the variety of silhouettes and colours, is that this layer gives structure to the look and completes it. I do not own light-coloured outerwear because, as a devoted black lover, I always lean towards dark shades; but if you are a fan of powder pink, beige, cream, and company, do not wait for the camel coat to arrive before embracing these hues.

As I write, so many outfit combinations come to mind, all put together almost by chance in the final minutes before running out the door. I can assure you that often the best combos are precisely the ones that are not overthought: they are spontaneous, they represent who we are, and they make us feel completely comfortable… and that detail in an outfit will always remain the most important of all.
